Touched by our Priest, etc…
I know, I know… tasteless headline. It’s true, though — Priest Holmes has a special place in the hearts of Kansas City Chiefs fans, and deservedly so. He’s really running away with this latest poll.
Personally, I voted for Larry Johnson due to his numbers, his jaw-dropping rushing style, his durability and what I feel he will eventually accomplish as a Chief. Besides, he’s already carried this team just as far in the playoffs as Priest ever did with inferior O-line and QB play — one and done.
The race for the second vote-getter, who will also advance, is on. The candidates are Abner Haynes, L.J. and Christian Okoye. Really, it comes down to two voting camps with completely different POVs:
A.) Old School – Larry Johnson is a young punk who needs to shut up and play out his contract. (*For the record, L.J. was adamant about remaining a Chief during his recent appearances on both Rome is Burning and Best Damn. Just wanted to squash the rumors about L.J. wanting to play in New York.*)
B.) New School – Just because we weren’t alive to see Abner Haynes play, doesn’t mean that he’s better than Johnson. Ever hear of NFL Films and the Internet? As for the Nigerian Nightmare, this isn’t a Tecmo Bowl poll.
Some other stuff:
Arrowhead Pride has lots of good stuff over there, specifically a link to last night’s Mile High Report radio show. He does a good job repping our Chiefs and we all but get mentioned. The Sports Guru is right — we all are on the same side, and Chiefs fans/blogs/sites should work together to ensure that the Chiefs can be the most popular team in the league.
ESPN has the Chiefs ranked 20th in the site’s NFL power rankings. Check out this contradictory quote:
“Damon Huard played well last year and Brodie Croyle might have a bright future, but it’s pretty clear that QB is a major issue in Kansas City right now.”
I just don’t get that.
SI.com’s Don Banks is high on Damon Huard. His logic speaks to me…
“And the guy can play a little. He had a 98.0 passer rating last year, and went 5-3 as a starter, with 11 touchdowns and one pick. Unless the Chiefs are willing to dump the season as part of Croyle’s development, Huard gives them their only shot to win now.”
SI.com also has us listed as fourth in the site’s “NFL’s Top 10 Shakiest QB Situations.”
FoxSports.com’s Peter Schrager ranked our off-season 15th best, but likes our playoff chances, to some degree anyway…
“Are they in better shape than they were in January: The Chiefs were a playoff team last season, ending the year on a bit of a hot streak. The Green situation’s a bit weird, but once cleared up — Kansas City should be good to go for 2007. The draft was solid, and the Edwards and Harris signings improve the defense. Ideally, Johnson won’t be carrying the ball more than 400 times this season. Look for the rookie Smith to help carry the load. The AFC West is tough — but the Chiefs could be a playoff team again.”
More to come. Don’t forget to vote for The COAT!

….rotflmao…”Tecmo Bowl”…I felt that verbal harpoon…..C.O. (i.e. N.N.) may not have put up the great career numbers but was as dominant a back as any while he was playing….on LJ: I saw the interview on Jim Rome and was pleasantly surprised. Course I didn’t expect a Jim Everett meltdown either!!!! LOL
May 17th, 2007 at 2:43 pmYes, LJ loves KC like he said on Rome. He also said Arrowhead is the greatest place to play
May 17th, 2007 at 2:56 pmI had to vote for T-Rich. I have met this guy many times in my life and is a great guy. He is one of my all-time favorite Chiefs and did whatever the team asked of him. He also paved the way for Priest to get nasty.
May 17th, 2007 at 2:58 pmOkoye and Word were sick on Super Techmo Bowl. Then you got to throw bombs to Stephon Paige and rush the QB with DT. Love That Game!
May 17th, 2007 at 2:59 pmI am glad Marcus received a couple votes as they were not from me, I voted for Abner,…
May 17th, 2007 at 3:09 pmNot because I saw him play, but more because of
the opinions of all our now, Hall of Fame Chiefs players.
All of them recall the player he was and what he brought to the table.
I hear you. Abner was great, there is no doubting that.
May 17th, 2007 at 3:38 pmJust be glad we are doing the Chiefs…..*COAT*
and not the Dallas…*Doat*
That would be a real bitter mixup at running back…
May 17th, 2007 at 4:30 pmconsidering, half of their fans still wont admit that E.Smith ran behind what was almost two O-lines…lol
I had to go with Christian Okoye, the “Nigerian Nightmare”. I fell in love with the Chiefs watching him bust up the middle running people over. I hope he gets enough votes to be the second RB behind Priest.
May 17th, 2007 at 4:31 pmjust to show some the stats…
May 17th, 2007 at 5:29 pmAbner Haynes had career total averages of
punt returns…10.3 yds
kick returns…25 yds
receiving … 12.3 yds
rushing …… 4.5yds
He may have played in a different era but tell me L.J. or Priest or even Okoye could have returned kicks and punts and still had the above averages…
I don’t think any of the running backs today will end up with over 4.5 yards average per carry lifetime. And when you add to that he ran back all those kicks and punts…man it is hard to believe he doesnt have more votes!!!
I dont think many Chiefs dont have love for the Nightmare. It just makes me sad cause every time I hear his name I just remember Steve Atwater blowing him up. Damn Donkeys!!
May 17th, 2007 at 5:40 pmI will not waver…
1. L.J.
May 17th, 2007 at 7:18 pm2. Priest
lol
May 17th, 2007 at 7:29 pmno problem ….I understand people like whom they like,
just hard to believe he was this good and he doesn’t have votes, the only reason I can see is he wasn’t playing now.
it’s really a tough poll, cause younger people will be bias to guys like lj and priest, if not only for the reason that they haven’t seen most of the others play. personaly, the oldest guy on that list i’ve watched is allen, which leaves him, richardson, anders, holmes, and johnson. not alot to choose from, but still a tough call. was tempted to say t-rich, but went holmes.
